The History of Modern Fashion, Chat with Sabrina Nelson

Listen as I sit down with a friend of the podcast and expert on all things fashion, particularly rock & roll, Sabrina Nelson. Sabrina and I chat about the history of fashion, focusing on modern fashion post-pandemic. We fall into tangents about the complexities of workplace wear, and expectations of women and femme-presenting people. We finish by discussing the trends we want to see in 2025.

Sabrina and I heavily reference the article “The History of Fashion Through the Decades” by Glam Observer and highly recommend reading it. The below images are examples of styles Sabrina and I discuss throughout the episode.

We start with discussing 1900s fashion. Pictures below from the Met and Pinterest showcase the layers we reference in the podcast.

We continue by comparing these fashions to those of the 1920s. The classic flapper girl style. Picture of Louise Brooks in 1925 from Glam Observer.

The image below is of the infamous Club Kids: Michael Fazakerley, Keda, Kabuki Starshine, and Sacred Boy in 1992 from the Them article “When the Club Kids Ruled New York City.”

On the left is a photo of Bon Jovi from the 80s, an example of the “hair bands” Sabrina refers to, while on the right is a photo of a Hang Ten ad from 1981 showing the athletic wear of the 80s.

Photo of Ashley Tisdale at the premiere of Princess Diaries 2 in 2004, and again in 2004 wearing the infamous dress over jeans that Sabrina and I discuss. Both images are from InStyle.

Below is a collection of examples of 70s fashion coming back into the mainstream from an article by Glamour called “How to Wear the ’70s Fashion Trends Celebs Are Bringing Back for Summer.”

An example of people dressing up post-pandemic from “Post-Pandemic Dressing Finally Takes Shape” by the New York Times.

Thank you so much for listening! Let me know what trend you’d like to see come back in 2025.
