The Minneapolis fashion scene focuses on sustainability and diversity, in a world where fast fashion is growing rapidly, how will it keep up?

No matter who you are the MN Renaissance Festival is a space for you to dress up, and be whoever, or whatever, you want to be. “I love dressing up for the ren fest because I love being part of a crowd of joyful weirdos. Diverse fashion is a love letter to each person’s aesthetic, body, gender, and feeling. I feel like I can simultaneously flaunt my uniqueness and blend into a crowd. It’s comforting and exciting to all be different together.” Said festival regular Liz Allen, “Plus I look great in a corset.”

Though encouraging people to spend less money and generate less waste is generally considered a good thing, the fact that it’s trending on TikTok does raise some concerns. “Do you really care about cutting down on waste, or do you just want to look like the kind of person who does?” Asks Tiffany Ferg.

“That’s the whole idea of all of this resale business is that well-made things can last a lifetime and be passed around from person to person. There’s so much new stuff being produced constantly that just gets thrown away within the year. Things that are 50-60 years old are still holding strong because the quality was just so much better. It’s nice to keep those things in circulation.” Says Carrie Martinson.

“Should a place be able to do that? To say ‘No, here’s who we’re catering to?’ Or should it be the expectation that every place will have sizes for everyone?” Alexis Irish, a 27-year-old who lives in the Twin Cities metro area, and is a size 14/16/18, asks.

“We’re taking comfort in the fact that the fight never ends and that the restaurant has already begun to change because of this effort.” Says Theo Ebarb, a server at Colita.

Though this video shows a very small part of the Minneapolis art scene, it gives a window into the large-scale art that is featured in the city, to the art made by individuals within the community.

While traveling in London I was able to visit the Victoria & Albert Museum. The fashion collection at the V&A is the largest collection of clothing in the world. The collection spans five centuries and includes rare 17th and 18th-century gowns. Admission is free, and the collections are divine.

Sabrina and I chat about the history of fashion, focusing on modern fashion post-pandemic. Despite the scale and popularity of the Met Gala, most people are unaware of the work behind the scenes, the hands that make each gown, or what goes on after the carpet. I sat down with Marah Harings, one of the team of 12 tailors who worked on Michael Kors’ collection for this year’s Met Gala to get her experience working for fashion’s biggest night.

Where other fashion weeks focus on pageantry, MN focuses on the future of fashion they want to see. “We were never trying to be New York or LA,” Jahna Peloquin, Fashion Week MN co-founder, said.
